University Project: Illustration: Bookworks project

This was my final project for the year before Easter break, so yes there has been quite a delay in me posting these images.  

The project was an Artist book project where we were required to choose a novel from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's novels, I decided fairly quickly that it wasn't going to be a Sherlock Holmes novel as I figured it was what a lot of people were going to be chose. But to be honest we were only meant to take inspiration from it, we weren't turn the novel into an artist book or illustrating it.

I chose 'the Lost World' because it was far and away different from Sherlock Holmes. Interestingly enough my project started out going in a completely different direction. The book was going to sort of prove the plausibility of Dinosaurs surviving to present day or at least to the time of the book.

This proved to be too complex, and with the time scale for this project I decided I needed to focus it more on one thing, rather than multiple things. I was going to have 3 sections, one for the volcanic aspect, the mountain plateau and dinosaurs. I brought my focus in on the volcanic aspect, doing a book on around volcanoes was much more interesting and also manageable.

So in the this final artist book I looked at aspects of a volcano from its Shape, size, temperatures it reaches, the eruptions and just for fun I finished with how to make a volcano.

It was a fairly enjoyable project, it wasn't a complete success but I managed, and I was happy with it for the most part, it could have been improved if I had more time though.

University Project: Social Awareness: Feminism

 

With this project I hoped to change people's view on feminism, as my research revealed that it’s often viewed as a bit of dirty word, all about women who hate men and that it should be ignored. But in fact it is so much more than that most people don't know its true definition, it’s about equality of the sexes or more accurately Gender equality. I also want to put across this message to men in particular as they are the ones who need to be supporting this movement as it is often those men that can make a difference.

So its about everyone being able to embrace the label of feminist and realise that the fight for equal rights isn't over and that if your someone who believes in equality among the sexes and can't stand the ill-treatment of women is wrong then you might just be a feminism. It is a men’s issue as well because it’s not just women who are having a hard time, Gender stereotypes and double standards have men trapped, we are constantly being told what a man should be and what a women should be, Masculinity and Femininity we aren't allowed be somewhere in the middle or one side over the other if it doesn’t match our gender. This means we are allowed to be our true selves, to be human, so we are in fact for some of us we are incomplete people living in silent misery because of how society defines men and what were expected to be, that’s why suicide is the biggest killer of men, we aren’t allowed to be vulnerable, to show emotion or even cry because it’s not manly.

Anyway this became a very important subject for me because I have dealt and still dealing with this conflict, I want to be seen as a man but some aspects of myself, may lead that into question, what is right for me? Can I be what society wants me to and be my true self, is there a middle ground? Where is it?  

University Project: Number Through Print- Barcodes are Everywhere!!

My Second project of the first term of my 2nd year and it felt so much better than first that's for sure. I was in the studio or the print room on a week daily basis, its so easy to do a load of prints and I did produce a nice body of work.

The project required me to explore an area of number and produce four outcomes around that subject area, I chose to look at Barcodes. Particularly Human Barcoding and the concept of Barcodes being everywhere in our Daily lives. It was a messy project, my main printing processes being Screenprint and Lino print, Lino being the messy process as I found it took the longest to dry which proved a problem when compose one my final outcomes which was on tracing paper.

 

 

 

University Project: Sequential Illustration

This was one of my first project of my 2nd year on my University Illustration course, it was very enjoyable, I thoroughly enjoyed the subject matter even if the outcome wasn't as fully developed as it could have been and it wasn't as well received by some of my lecturers in the assessment feedback, it gave me a chance to learn from my mistakes and do better in the project that was to follow.

Here I explore the theories of Time travel with my protagonist in this sequence of 10 images, here I look at specifically the Butterfly effect, it supposed effects on the time line. My protagonist travels to the past and being a clumsy cluts begins to cause chaos in the time line by stepping on butterflies and shooting a dinosaur and the results aren't good when he finally returns to the so called present.

     

Im at University now :D

I'm finally at University studying Illustration in Portsmouth, just coming to end of the first term and Ive found it to be very split, the first half was a nightmare with the first project not going very well, while the second half was much better and went very well.

I don't have anything to show from the first project but to be honest I wasn't very happy with the end result, it was all very rushed, I wish I had done better.

I do however have the final outcome of my second project, which was a lot of fun and enjoyed it a lot :) it was a book cover project where we had to choose a book from the Penguin Classics collection and design a new cover for it, so I chose 'Rudyard Kipling's - The Jungle Book' and here is the outcome :)

Well I finished the Foundation Diploma in Art, Design & Media in June and am now ready waiting for September to come around, when I am finally off to University to study illustration. I'm so excited and nervous at the same time in anticipation of what I will get to do on the course.

But as for what has happened since my last post well skipping my pathway which didn't go so well in my opinion since I only passed it at level 3, the only good thing that came out of it that I was able to learn from it and improve for my confirmatory.

Overall I think my Confirmatory went brilliantly, I couldn't have been happier with the end result though of course there is always room for improvement. This project was informed by a brief that was set by Bristol UWE one of my university choices which ask me to look at the three most significant/important influences on my life so far. I chose to expand on this for my confirmatory as it was a project that had the most promise and would allow me to do a variety of different things with it. In this project I looked a t my childhood, my teens up until now in the present. These illustrations were going to follow the same formatted size but I soon found that had to change and they adopted a variety of sizes, here are the results:

   

   

   

 

what have I been up to? Foundation Diploma in Art, Design & Media:- Exploratory stage

Well its been a while hasn't it but I've been busy, I'm 8/10 weeks(depending on how you count them) into the course and Its been a much faster pace than I'm use to with the exploratory stage meaning a different workshop every week with two review weeks. Some have been better than others but have been very useful. Some of the particularly frustrating ones have been the ones that come up just before a review and should have been the ones I've enjoyed. 

But first of all I am going to take you back to the Summer project which got me on the course which was a great project to over the summer and it would be good to revisit in the future as there is a lot more could do with it, anyway here it is as it stands and it looks at the mystery of the forest or at least how it was once a mysterious place filled with mysterious creatures.

 

Next I'm going to highlight some of the workshops which I have been really good or not so good but mainly the work I went as far as to take a photo of it but I think got most of them anyway, there will be gaps I expect.

I've been able to do 'Photography' which essentially a refresher for me but very helpful, 'Animation' which was awesome and I'll post that if it will let, Graphics which was the most gruelling and time consuming, 'Printmaking' which just a refresher, 'Painting' it abstract art and was very fun I essentially did what I felt like doing :), 'Illustration' stressful even when its the specialism I'd like to work in but when you don't have a specific style and your lecturer wants to produce 20 thumbnails and try different media outcomes its difficult to do that in a week, the same with Graphics, but they were both useful.
